Midwifery

A team-based approach to holistic, individualized care

At Jefferson Health – Northeast, the Center for Gynecology and Women's Health has recently expanded to offer midwifery care.  A certified nurse-midwife (CNM) provides care throughout a person’s lifespan – from routine gynecologic care, annual exams and screenings, to family planning services, pregnancy, childbirth and beyond. In addition, midwives offer resources, guidance and support to help you make informed decisions based on your healthcare goals.

Every person is unique. Using a team-based approach, our midwife works in collaboration with our OB/GYN physicians to ensure that every patient receives safe, high quality care to meet their individual needs.

What is a Certified Nurse-Midwife?

Certified nurse-midwives are registered nurses with extensive clinical training and graduate education in midwifery. Midwives pass a national certification exam administered by the American Midwifery Certification Board (AMCB). Midwives specialize in providing individualized, holistic care during pregnancy and childbirth, in addition to general reproductive health care.

What healthcare services do midwives provide?

Midwives work in collaboration with our OB/GYN physicians to provide safe, individualized care throughout the prenatal, childbirth and postpartum stages. Beyond pregnancy, midwives also provide general reproductive health care throughout a person’s lifespan. Education is a hallmark of midwifery. Midwives offer wellness education and counseling to meet your healthcare needs.

The healthcare services that midwives offer include:

  • Annual exams (pap smears, breast exams, mammogram prescriptions)
  • Family planning and contraception
  • STD testing and treatment
  • Preconception care
  • Prenatal care
  • Labor, birth and postpartum care
  • Menopause care

Why should I choose a midwife?

Midwives play a key role in our collaborative approach to reproductive and maternal care. Midwifery care puts an emphasis on shared decision-making, an approach in which you and your provider share information and agree on a plan of care together. Holistic in nature, midwifery care is grounded in an understanding of the physical, psychological, emotional, social, cultural and spiritual factors that influence reproductive and maternal health. Midwives are committed to ensuring that you are empowered to make the right healthcare decisions for you and your family.
