The Comprehensive Center for Bariatric Surgery (Weight Loss)

AM I A CANDIDATE FOR WEIGHT-LOSS SURGERY?

One in 25 American adults is morbidly obese - that is, roughly 100 pounds overweight or roughly 75 pounds overweight with other weight-related conditions, such as high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and/or breathing difficulties during sleep. Morbid obesity can have a very negative impact on your health. It is a significant cause of premature death and a major contributor to many other diseases and conditions, including stroke, heart disease, certain types of cancer and infertility. obesity can also get in the way of everyday activities such as spending time with loved ones or even walking up the stairs.

For the vast majority of people with morbid obesity, diet and exercise simply don't lead to significant, or sustained, weight loss. Fortunately, for many people, bariatric (weight-loss) surgery provides a better alternative. In fact, medical data supports the idea that bariatric surgery is the only treatment for morbid obesity that is truly scientifically effective long-term for the majority of patients.

Ideal candidates for bariatric surgery have a body mass index (BMI is the measurement of weight in relation to height) of 40 or more, or a BMI of 35 or above with other weight-related medial conditions such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, obstructive sleep apnea, certain heart conditions, or a rare condition known as benign intracranial hypertension (Pseudotumor cerabri). All patients have an extensive evaluation by our multidisciplinary team to determine if bariatric surgery is the best course of action.

JEFFERSON TORRESDALE HOSPITAL'S COMPREHENSIVE CENTER FOR WEIGHT-LOSS SURGERY

Procedures Our program offers minimally invasive procedures-including Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass and sleeve gastrectomy-to help patients begin the journey to a healthier life.

Sleeve Gastrectomy Sleeve gastrectomy involves removing a portion of the stomach and creating a new smaller stomach in the shape of a "sleeve." The section removed is also responsible for making ghrelin, a hormone that signals hunger to the brain. With a smaller stomach and less ghrelin, patients' appetites are easily satisfied by smaller meals. On average, our sleeve gastrectomy patients lose 55 to 65 percent of their excess weight.

Roux-en-Y Gastric Bybass The Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass achieves weight loss through decreasing the amount of food the patient can eat as well as through a component of malsbsorption of nutrients. Vitamin supplementation is required after the operation.

Minimally Invasive Minimally invasive techniques revolutionized weight-loss surgery. Procedures done at Jefferson Torresdale Hospital are done with laparoscopy or robotic-assisted surgery, which means smaller incisions and less pain, allowing patients to get out of bed at night. This can help shorten the hospital stay.
