Arthur Bartolozzi, MD, Medical Director of Sports Medicine at 3B Orthopaedics at Jefferson Health, Performs Livestream Surgery to College and High School Classes

On Thursday, November 15, Arthur Bartolozzi, MD, Medical Director of Sports Medicine at 3B Orthopaedics at Jefferson Health, performed a surgical procedure to repair an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), which was livestreamed simultaneously to students at West Chester University and Delsea Regional High School in Franklinville, New Jersey.

Dr. Bartolozzi performed the surgery in the operating room at Jefferson Bucks Hospital. In attendance at each respective location were students enrolled in the West Chester University Department of Sports Medicine’s Athletic Training Program, as well as 16 Delsea Regional High School students with interest in pursuing careers in physical therapy, athletic training, nursing, and other medical concentrations.

This was the first-ever livestream observation for the Delsea students. “I used to bring former classes to Dr. Bartolozzi’s facilities and remotely observe him perform knee replacement and reconstruction surgeries,” recalled David Heyel, MEd, ATC, CSCS, NSCA-CPT, Health and Physical Education Teacher at Delsea Regional High School. “We haven’t done them in a while due to logistical reasons, but the livestream technology made it possible again. It was a great opportunity for the students.”

West Chester University has participated in similar live surgical demonstrations annually for more than 20 years. First-year clinical students attend the livestream, while second-year students attend a surgical procedure in the operating room.

“They’re learning to become athletic trainers, and this helps them understand what goes on in the operating room from a surgical and an anatomic perspective,” explained Neil Curtis, EdD, LAT, ATC, Associate Professor, Department of Sports Medicine, Program Director of Athletic Training Education at West Chester University. “When they know the kind of injury they’re dealing with, and what’s involved in the surgery, they’ll know how to respond appropriately with the post-op rehabilitation.”

As he continues to dedicate his life to exceptional orthopaedic care, he remains passionate about passing along his knowledge to future generations. “Helping to educate students studying in this field has always been something that I am passionate about,” said Dr. Bartolozzi. “Their enthusiasm for learning to help athletes return to play and perform at their best is why I enjoy providing them with the experiences and insights I’ve gained over my career.
